Upon retiring after 38 years as a Virginia banker in 2005, Maupin and his wife moved to Davidson to be closer to family. Maupin was familiar with the Davidson/ Lake Norman/ Mecklenburg area as he had been visiting the area since the early nineties when his son was attending Davidson College.
